Introduction

Requirements

To install MDT Professional Edition the computer has to comply with some requirements.

Hardware requirements

MDT Professional Edition is intended to be run on Intel IA32, 100% compatible processors, under Windows 2000 or higher operating system.
We recommend the following minimum hardware characteristics:

• processor: 1.5 GHz
• RAM: 256 MB
• free HDD size: 160 MB

Software requirements

MDT Professional Edition requires some additional software to be installed:

• Java – J2SE version 1.5.x (Java 5.0)
• Eclipse Platform Runtime Binary version 3.4.x, 3.5.x or 3.6.x

Java

MDT Professional Edition requires J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) or J2SE Development Kit (JDK) to be installed. If you do not intend to develop Java applications, the JRE is the right choice.
Current version of MDT Professional Edition requires Java 5.0 to be installed.
The Java 5.0 can be downloaded from Java SE Downloads web page. Please follow the Java Installation Instructions to install Java on your computer.

Eclipse

MDT Professional Edition requires Eclipse. Please use the 3.4, 3.5 or the latest 3.6 release.
Eclipse can be downloaded from the Eclipse Downloads web page.
Up to your needs you can install:

• Eclipse Platform Runtime Binary – this option is intended for Magik developers who plan only Magik development
• Eclipse SDK – for developers who, apart from Magik work with Java, develop Eclipse Plug-ins. This version contains sources, user's and programmer's documentation of Eclipse.
• JDT Runtime Binary – for Magik developers who work with Java too

The aforementioned list does not contain all possible options.

Network requirements

To activate the license you will need connection to the MDT License Server. If you are using proxy, configure the network connection in your Eclipse. More information about proxy configuration can be found in the Workbench User Guide.

Licensing

To fully leverage the MDT Professional Edition in the Smallworld™ GIS application development it must be registered and activated.
There are several types of licenses provided with MDT Professional Edition:

• Trial License, which is time limited license to use the MDT Professional Edition. The license may be activated only once on particular computer and does not allow to access MDT upgrades.
• Single User License, which is a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the MDT Professional Edition. The licensee may install and use the MDT Professional Edition on single computer.
• Portable License, which is is a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the MDT Professional Edition. The licensee may install and use the MDT Professional Edition on any computer with the Hardware Key attached to it.
• Annual Maintenance License, which provides free MDT Professional Edition upgrades and free technical support for 1 year.

Installing Eclipse

Eclipse is distributed as a zip file. You just have to uncompress it into required directory. Usually it is your Program Files and a Eclipse\Eclipse 3.4 (3.5 or 3.6) subdirectory.
After uncompressing Eclipse you can run it by calling <Eclipse directory>\eclipse.exe. You will be asked for the location of your workspace.
All resources you are working with will be stored in this directory. You can always change this directory in the future.

Installing MDT

MDT Professional Edition is distributed as a zip file.
The installation process is supported by some wizards which make the process quite easy and comfortable.
Unless otherwise stated you have to enter required data and use the Next or Finish buttons to proceed installation process.
